About Us

Mid-Carolina Area Health Education Center, Inc. (AHEC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to strengthening the healthcare workforce throughout central South Carolina—particularly in rural and underserved communities. Since 1976, we’ve served as a vital link between academic institutions and local communities, delivering high-quality education, training, and recruitment programs that:

  • Inspire students to pursue health careers
  • Connect healthcare professionals with the communities that need them
  • Enhance access to quality healthcare across our region

As one of four regional centers within the South Carolina AHEC System, Mid-Carolina AHEC proudly serves an 11-county region with a strong emphasis on primary care workforce development and long-term retention.  We provide three core services designed to support and grow the healthcare pipeline:

  1. Continuing Education – Offering professional development opportunities for healthcare providers to maintain licensure and improve patient care.
  2. Health Professions Student Support – Coordinating clinical education placements and resources to help health professions students succeed.
  3. Health Careers Exploration – Engaging middle school, high school, and college students with programs that promote health career awareness and readiness.
